Mrs Trudi Smith - Playgroup Deputy Manager
Miss Louise Salter - Playgroup Assistant
Miss Jorgia Scarrott - Playgroup Assistant
Mrs Sarah Khan - Playgroup Assistant
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you and your child to our day care. We hope that this booklet will help you to understand a little of how our daycare works and answer some of your questions, but there may be many more, so do come in and talk to the staff, who will be very pleased to see you.
Our aims are to provide excellent daycare facilities in a happy, fun filled environment. Our staff believe that play is essential for every child’s learning so have provided high quality resources for both indoor and outdoor activities.
We also believe that parents have a very important role to play in the education of their children and we actively encourage close co-operation between home and school. We value and build on the experience and knowledge which children bring from home, and we hope that you will share with us, in making your child’s education in the daycare at Lionel Primary School enjoyable and successful.

Each child is unique, learning and developing at different rates and in different ways. By working together with the child, parents/carers, staff can plan to meet each child’s individual needs to enable them to reach their own full potential.
Our environment both indoors and outdoors aims to provide activities to encourage exploration, investigation and discovery through a wide range of play experiences.
These may include:
Listening and speaking activities
Stories and rhymes
THE DAILY ROUTINE
Children will arrive at the setting and hang up their coats and bags. They will then select an activity of their choice. Throughout the session children will have a balance of child initiated and adult led activities both indoors and outdoors working to the
Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.
At the end of the session children will gather together for song time after which they are returned individually to their parents or guardians.
Children are encouraged to independently access a range of fruit along with a choice of milk or water to drink. Please advise staff of any special dietary requirements.
PARENTS AND LITTLE LIONS
Our aim is to establish a firm partnership between all parents and staff. Education does not begin when your child enters school. He/she has been learning since birth and we need to build on and extend this development.
We welcome information on your child’s and families interests and experiences enabling us to build upon them within Little Lions.
Your child’s development records are available for you to access as required and we encourage you to incorporate you own observations and comments freely.
HOW YOU CAN HELP AT HOME
TALKING AND LISTENING
Talk about the things you do and see, about people around you and your child. Count things around the house, the stairs, buttons, plate's on table etc. Talk about the colour, shape and size of everyday objects.
STORIES AND NURSERY RHYMES
Children love learning nursery rhymes. It can help to develop and improve memory and language, so sing and recite as many rhymes as possible.
Reading together at home, sharing a book, talking about the pictures, asking questions about the story: “What do you think will happen next?” is one of the best ways you can help your child. Just enjoy
the books together!
BE POSITIVE: always give your child lots of praise.
If your child is unwell please do not bring him/her to day care.
We know from experience that young children become very distressed when they are not well, even if they say they feel ‘okay’. If they are not well enough to play outside they should not really be at daycare. We would welcome a telephone call to let us know that your child is ill. It is with regret that we still charge for sessions that children do not attend even if it is a result of illness of hospital appointments.
MEDICINES IN SCHOOL
Medicins should only be taken at Little Lions when essential: that is where it would be detrimental to a child’s health if the medicine were not administered during the day. For children with long term medical conditions a health pro forma needs to be completed. It is the parents’ responsibility to provide details of any change to the prescription or support required. All medication MUST be in the original packaging.
COLLECTION OF CHILDREN
It is necessary for all children to be collected by a responsible adult. For the safety of your child, please inform the daycare staff if your child is to be collected by anyone other than the parent/guardian. Please ensure prompt collection of your child to avoid any unnecessary distress to him/her. In the event of an uncollected child the policy and procedure will be followed.
Please try to dress you child in appropriate clothing and footwear suitable for all types of activities such as painting digging and other outdoor and messy activities. Clothing should be easy for children to remove independently for toileting i.e. no dungarees, belts. Outdoor activities will be accessed all year round in all weather conditions therefore suitable clothing will be required.
Please name your child’s clothes, shoes and bag so your child can quickly recognise his/her own.
Please encourage your child to be independent and allow him/her to put on his/her own coat and shoes. Putting on and taking off a coat is important since the children play inside and outside all through the year.
