SL Centre Hawthorn Class

Hello Hawthorn Pupils!

We hope you and your families have had a restful Easter holiday and are ready for another fun-packed half term of learning!

Below are some important reminders for you and your parents/ carers this term.

   Class Teacher: Miss C Higgins

LSAs: Miss A Thompson, Miss H Judd & Mrs J Joyce

(AM: Mon - Wed)           (Thurs - Fri)          (PM: Mon - Fri)

At Lionel, we know that children who read for pleasure will do well at school and beyond. We foster a love of reading through our enthusiastic reading culture. In Hawthorn Class, we have a well-stocked library with a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction; we will encourage your child to select a book to read for pleasure and change it regularly, alongside their learning to read banded book. Please ask your child about their class library book and share it with them.

In addition, your child's class teachers will read aloud daily to the class from a well-chosen and well-loved book.

Developing a daily reading habit is equally vital to becoming a lifelong lover of books; we expect children to read at home for at least 20 minutes every day and bring in their signed Reading Records. Please help your child to develop and maintain this habit.

Books can be changed any morning, once the previous book/s have been returned.

Times Tables

It is vital children have fast, accurate recall of all their times tables facts; therefore, your child will receive a page of times tables grids with their homework to complete (ideally one every day).

The weekly times table test will be completed each Thursday, when their score will be recorded.  Your child should aim to maintain and/ or beat their score, each week.

Children in Year 4 will be partaking in the National Multiplication Times Table Check in June; therefore, it is important to support your child in practising their times tables knowledge at speed; as they will be expected to recall a random mix of times tables to 12 (6 seconds per question).

At Lionel, we offer children a rich and varied curriculum at every stage of their time here. Please find below our curriculum map for the following half term, showing what your child will be learning.

Home Learning

Home Learning will be set on Google Classroom every Friday afternoon. This work will consist of a multiple-choice comprehension task, and a Maths activity based on the week's topic or a revision exercise.

Your child's spelling words will also be listed; these should be practised each evening in preparation for the spelling test on Friday

Completed homework should be handed in for marking by Wednesday morning.

Please remind your child to wear their P.E. kit on their P.E. days:                                    Wednesdays (Indoors - Swimming) and Thursdays (Outdoors).

For swimming children must wear:

  • a one-piece swimming costume or trunks (not board shorts);
  • a swimming hat.

Please also remember to label all your child’s clothing.

No jewellery is to be worn in school.  An exception will be made for pierced ears (small studs only may be worn for safety reasons) or if the jewellery is of a religious or medical significance.

Finally, please do not hesitate to contact us (via e-mail: should you require any further information.
