Intent and Implementation of Maths at Lionel
Intent
At Lionel, we ensure that all pupils leave with an enjoyment of maths and an appreciation of its vital role in our ever-changing society. We want our children to leave primary school as confident and resilient mathematicians. Pupils at Lionel are taught to think mathematically and to solve ‘real-world’ problems using well-chosen strategies.
As well as being important in its own right, Maths will help strengthen pupils’ knowledge in other subjects (such as Science and Design & Technology) and will also help them when faced with maths-related tasks in their lives outside of school.
Having a deep understanding of maths is vital to help pupils be successful not only in their schooling, but throughout their adult lives and when they enter the world of work.
Implementation
Maths is taught in all classes from EYFS to Year 6 daily. We use a variety of resources to bring maths to life for our pupils. All pupils receive appropriate support in order for them to reach their potential. Some pupils may take part in additional maths interventions outside of class-based maths lessons.
To ensure whole-school consistency and progression, Maths at Lionel is planned using the White Rose Maths Scheme of Learning. This is fully aligned with the National Curriculum 2014. We modify this Scheme of Learning to create a bespoke curriculum that matches the needs of our school.
Ways You Can Help at Home
As mentioned above, we use the White Rose Scheme of Learning at school. They have some excellent free-to-download resources for parents on their website: https://whiteroseeducation.com/parent-pupil-resources.
Please also refer to our Optional Home Learning pages where new content will be added throughout the year.
